Metaphor is a way of expressing objects by comparing them to other objects. Contrast with similes. If the simile compares target A, which is intended to be expressed in the same format as 'A is B' or 'A like B' to other target B equally, the metaphor is a metaphor that replaces A with B, such as 'A is B'. In other words, metaphors are techniques that equate what is meant to be expressed, which is to be compared to a tenor, which is to be used as a vehicle. Let me introduce two poems. Here, similes and metaphors were used respectively. /Life -Liner Maria Lilke You don't have to understand life. Life is like a festival. Live as it happens day by day. When the wind blows, the children who pick up the scattered petals I don't think about collecting the petals. Enjoy the moment you pick up the petals. If you're satisfied with the moment, that's all./ In this poem, life is expressed as a festival using like. A is like B, so we can see that similes are used. /The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. / In this poem, there is a two-pronged path. We express our choices in life by comparing them in two ways. The word "life" didn't come out, but you can see that choice in life is the topic. We can see that metaphor was used in this poem.
